There is a misconception that we are paid for our time. This is understandable especially if you work by the hour. But there is a broader truth.
We are not paid for our time. We are paid for the value we bring during that time.
When you are applying for a new job or looking for a promotion the best thing you can do is communicate the value you bring. Many people call this your branding statement. If you work in marketing, then you may get that concept. For the rest of us, a branding statement is a foreign concept.
How do you communicate your value?
The only reason any one is hired is to work on problems that are not being solved. Here are some examples:
- people are being served
- sales are not being made
- systems are not being maintained
- goods are not being manufactured
Every job has problems that need to be solved or worked on. That is where you step in and do the job. Solving problems, in whatever form they take, is the value that you provide.
The more you can communicate the value you bring, the more opportunities will open up for you in your career. The more you can communicate your value, the better chance you'll have at improving your income.
My encouragement to you is to think of all the ways you provide value to the organization you work for now and all the organizations you've worked for in the past. Put these values in words on your resume, LinkedIn profile, and into all the conversations you have with employers and potential employers.
This will greatly benefit your career.
